Submitting your paper early is a great idea. The system can become overloaded at the last minute. You are not limited to the subjects that are outlined in the essay guide. There is no advantage to using the subjects in the course description. You can research and write on any aspect of music or culture that relates to Hip-Hop culture or Rap. Just pick a topic that interests you and research it. Your own opinions are not important here – indeed they are to be avoided. Research your topic and support your arguments with citations. Include these citations in Chicago style. About writing the paper: Be careful to avoid colloquial English. Use an academic or scientific writing style. Colloquial means ‘casual or slang language’ For example. don’t say: “I think that…” say “research has shown that…” and then add your citation. Don’t say “let’s begin with…”. Read a couple of academic papers to get the feel of what’s required. You don’t have to follow the format of an academic paper just write about the subject (that relates to CBUM) and offer some insights and show that you have researched it. Minimum 3000 words (never mind the number of page numbers that are mentioned in the Formatting Guidelines – less than 3000 words will cost you marks. More than 3200 will also cost you – this is different from what the guidelines say! Citations are simply done with a built-in feature in Word. Here is an excellent Word how- to presentation. Although footnotes are acceptable in Chicago style. Use a Bibliography only. Use inline citations as described in the video below. https://youtu.be/r4srwwHGWzg I have used it exclusively in all of my papers without a problem. The presenter in this link above uses MLA style, but you should choose the Chicago style in the Word menu as your preferred style. I know that the Essay Topics pdf says that Chicago style is ‘suggested’, BUT You are required to use Chicago Style – inline citations and not footnotes. I know that footnotes are OK in Chicago style but, in the Social Science papers, use Chicago Style; and it is simple to change this using the tool that I suggested above or Zotero or some other Citation management tool. Note that in Chicago Style the last name of the author comes first then a comma and the first name. You can always find an author – everything was written by a person, and they should be acknowledged. Here is an example: Anderson, Leon. 1999. “The open road to ethnology’s future.” Journal of Contemporary Ethnology 451-59.

Times New Roman font – double-spaced. 3000 words to 3200 words, Indent paragraphs. DO use paragraphs – a page-long paragraph is difficult to read. This is just good writing practice.

Use good grammar. If the grammar is weak your mark will be weak. I strongly suggest that you use Grammarly or the grammar check in Word to check your writing.

Don’t send drafts to check. Do get started though – you don’t have to write on the course content – just the course subject (CBUM) – any aligned material is OK.
