To what extent could we say the art was used for propaganda? What were the political ideals that were expressed? How effective or ineffective was this for the time? Ancient Near East and Egypt Greece and Rome Early Christian and Byzantine Islamic and Middle Ages Depending on which works you choose, you may want to refer back to readings in earlier modules on topics such as democracy in Greece, Imperial Rome, the Carolingian empire, etc., to bolster your ideas. In your response, also consider political images of our own time. How has a candidate or party used art in an effective way in our own times (positive or negative campaigning)? Does the historical or cultural context matter in terms of appropriateness or effectiveness of propaganda in art? Are there any ways that ancient propaganda pieces may have influenced those in our own time? Reference a specific example. Reflect on your research, and take a position on the following question: Is using art as propaganda legitimate? Why or why not? Write a proposition thesis statement, and include 2–3 examples that support your thesis. Use your readings for examples to support your claims. Highlight the factors that influence you. Initial posts should have a minimum length of 150 words.
