In The End of College, author Kevin Carey tells the story of higher education’s evolution as he also tells the story of his personal experience taking an MIT course through a massive open online course (MOOC) platform. In many ways, the argument of his book is based on the fundamental observation that higher education hasn’t changed very much over the past several hundred years. But as we’ve seen in other books we’ve looked at this quarter, higher ed has evolved as a sector — giving rise to new institutional forms such as liberal arts colleges, research universities, agricultural, technical and mechanical colleges, junior colleges, community colleges, and more in the last 200 years. Bearing that in mind, how much do you agree or disagree with Carey’s premise that higher ed needs to change at a more rapid pace to meet the needs of today’s learners?
