we have frequently discussed how the New Testament writers understood themselves to be a continuation, indeed, the proper continuation of Ancient Israelite/Judean religion. For this essay, I want you to reflect on this claim. Answer the following questions:
How do the New Testament writers express their belief that they are in continuity with Ancient Israelite/Judean religion (this is the religion that is expressed in what will come to be called the Old Testament by Christians)? Why do the New Testament writers make these claims of continuity?
As you reflect on these questions, ask yourself things like:
How is continuity expressed in New Testament material?
What does continuity look like?
How does each author demonstrate that they believe themselves to be in continuity with the Old Testament religious claims?
Where do the New Testament writers get their support?
How do they support their claims?
To what end do they make their claims?
(These are different ways of asking the same questions. The point is to make sure that you can communicate what they are doing and why.)
Citation/Source requirements:
You must cite the biblical material at least THREE times. At least once from each of the following categories:
Synoptics (Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts)
Pauline (Paul’s letters)
Other (Johannine, Catholic Espistles, etc)
You must also cite Johnson.
Johnson citations must have page numbers (or digital location) (make it clear which edition you are using), and biblical citations must come from Hart and have standard chapter and verse notation.
Your essay should land between 550 and 600 words. Responses under or over these limits will lose points at a minimum of one point per word outside the limitations.
