Emotional and Behavioral Milestones in Language Activities

Background: “Executive function” is a cognitive skill. It helps people reach goals, follow instructions, focus, and manage impulses. Children’s executive function influences their engagement in activities. As an educator, you can facilitate language activities that support children’s executive function. Review the module “Engaging with Children.” In particular, review the “Milestones in Emotional and Behavioral Regulation.”

In this assignment, you will write two complete paragraphs of three to five sentences each:

1. In the first paragraph, describe a planned language activity. Choose an activity that occurs often in your classroom or in settings you have observed.

2. In the second paragraph, identify the milestone of regulation that is most present in children during the activity. Hint: the three milestones from the module are “other-regulated” emotions and behaviors, “shared regulation,” and “self-regulation.” If you work with infants and toddlers, they are “other-regulated.”
