A nursing leader was working with staff nurses on a particular unit where the nurses did not have much research time and were not meeting certain quality benchmarks.

When thinking about making positive social change in an organization, the need to consider the levels of strategic planning and performance improvement will dictate what is required to impact positive social change.

For this Discussion, you create and post one evidence-based performance improvement strategy to support social change for a specific nonprofit or public/government organization.

When looking for a nonprofit or public/government organization and a positive social change goal or outcome that will be the basis for your performance improvement strategy, look for the words “nonprofit” or “government” organization when you go to its website or look at related information. Also, when thinking about positive social change, you are typically thinking about change that would support and care for others—making a good change to help people into a better situation and better future.

Consider the following scenario:

A nursing leader was working with staff nurses on a particular unit where the nurses did not have much research time and were not meeting certain quality benchmarks. They decided to build a performance improvement project and began by asking questions using an appreciative inquiry approach focusing on the platform to build performance improvements: “What has worked well in our organization? What works well for you when you are on your shifts? What are the things you want to see more of?” It gave the research project nurses a chance to think about those things, build on them, and begin to formulate ideas in a positive way. They sought to understand why benchmarks were not being met in their organization and the reasons why other similar teams were meeting the benchmarks (e.g., they have a lot of camaraderie, they are willing to help each other, they have a clear orientation path).

The goal is to apply to your organization what you know has worked, always involving your stakeholders so they can help identify the issues and drive change in a positive way. Making your goal a SMART goal (i.e., specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) can help to make the goal clear to the stakeholders involved and serve as a foundation for monitoring and successfully meeting the goal.

WEEKLY RESOURCES

TO PREPARE

· Consider a nonprofit or public/government organization and a positive social change goal or outcome that will be the basis for your performance improvement strategy as well as for your Levels of Evidence table to support the Literature Synthesis Assignment due in Week 8. If you are a leader who has had experience and/or is currently leading a nonprofit or public/government organization, you may choose your organization for this Discussion. Otherwise, you can pick any kind of nonprofit or public/government organization. Be aware that the larger the organization you choose, the more you will need to think about the levels of strategic planning and performance improvement. If you pick a larger organization, it is advisable to pick a piece within that organization that needs to be changed or where you want to effect change.

· Review the SMART goal interactive media and consider how to incorporate the SMART elements when crafting your social change goal.

· Review the social change resources and consider the information when crafting your social change goal.

· Search the Walden library for at least two peer-reviewed articles related to performance improvement strategies that support social change for a specific nonprofit or public/government organization for this Discussion. Use the peer-reviewed resources found in this week’s Learning Resources to support your research.
