Critical Issues in Treatment

There are three exercises/assignments related to Chapter 15. The first two were about medications. This one focuses on the psychotherapy side of treatment for psychological disorders or any of the treatments mentioned in the chapter or in class.

Read the story below. Then, pretend you are a psychotherapist . Choose the type of psychotherapy (see textbook), and follow the directions below the story.

Lindsey is an only child and the first in her family to go to college. She enjoyed her upbringing and describes her family life as “idyllic.” Her parents are both professionals who place much emphasis on their achievements and expect much of Lindsey. Lindsey reports having no difficulty in high school; she was popular socially, but not one of the “most popular.” She dated the same boy throughout high school, and, in fact, her parents insisted she go away to college to “meet other people.” The school she is attending was not her first choice, but her parents felt that the college would suit her best. During her freshman year, she was homesick, particularly after she split up from her high-school boyfriend. She says she has since adjusted to college life, although she still thinks about her old friends and does not do much socially.

Now in her junior year, she reports having difficulty in her course selection. She has chosen a business major at her parents’ suggestion, but she doesn’t like the major. She doesn’t “want the hassle of changing,” however, so seems apathetic about her chosen field. In the last several months, she has become less socially active and started regularly missing her classes. She reports having difficulty sleeping and has stopped taking care of herself. She rarely washes her clothes and hasn’t cut her hair in over a year. She has come to therapy without her parents’ knowledge and is concerned that they will consider her a failure. if they find out (Nevid, 2012).

1. Explain Lindsey’s disorder and explain what disorder she has and why you say this.

2. Then pretend you are a psychologist who uses one of the types of therapies described in your textbook, and explain how you would treat Lindsey and why.

3. Read at least two other student posts and respond to at least two students (with at least 50 words each).

For all discussions, you must post your own comments before reading other students’ comments. Your own post should be at least 250 words. Then respond to at least two students with at least 50 words per response. Post your comments by the due date; respond to two students by the following day.
