My Informative Speech Outline- Discussion 3

Specific Purpose: To inform my classmates of the top three growing careers in America today and why they are so popular.

Introduction: Do you ever sit at your job and wonder what else is out there for you? I know that I did until I decided to go back to school. Do you wonder what will be a good option if you were going to leave your current job? Well, maybe this speech can help give you a couple of ideas on a new career, as research shows these three careers are gaining popularity, fast.

Thesis/Preview: The three fastest growing careers in America today are wind turbine service technicians, nurse practitioners, and data scientists.

I. Wind turbine service technicians are tied for first place for fastest growing occupations.

A. Wind turbine service technicians growth rate is up 45% in 2022-2032, which is considered much faster than average.

1. The median salary for these workers is $57,320 per year, or $27.56 per hour.

2. You do not need related work experience to qualify for this position, as they provide long-term on-the-job training.

B. There were 11,200 jobs in 2022 for this position.

1. Although you do not necessarily need job related experience for this position, you do need a postsecondary non degree award typically.

2. The working environment for these positions is mostly outdoors, very high up on the turbines, and sometimes confined spaces, and you’re likely to be on call in the evening and on weekends.

Transition: If being a wind turbine service technician is not for you, there are two more jobs in the top three fastest growing occupations on our list, and this next one is tied for first place as well.

II. The next career, also coming in at  45% growth rate for 2022-32, is nurse practitioner.

A. Nurse practitioner positions come with various benefits.

1. The median salary for a nurse practitioner is $121,610 per year, or $60.53 per hour.

2. There were 323,900 jobs in 2022, and the job outlook is 38% for this position, which is much faster than the average.

3. There are various different types of settings that a nurse practitioner can work in, such as hospitals, doctor’s offices, and clinics.

B. Nurse practitioner’s also have to jump through some hoops prior to being licensed and getting the career as well.

1. You do need a master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner, which is at least 5-6 years of post high school coursework, depending on which routes you take and your workload.

2. Not only does the school work factor in, but with the average nurse practitioner degree costing up to $100,000, the average student loan debt for these individuals is $40,000-$54,999.

Transition: Now that we have looked at the two top spots in the career outlook spots, the third one is not far behind at 35% growth rate as well.

III. The third top career spot is the position of data scientist.

A. Data scientists have several benefits to speak of.

1. The average median salary for data scientists is $103,500 per year, or $49.76 hourly.

2. The job outlook is 35%, which is much faster than the average, and there were 168,900 jobs in 2022.

3. The setting for this type of work is typically in an office.

B. The typical path to becoming a data scientist is fairly straightforward.

1. The typical degree to become a data scientist is at the minimum, a bachelor’s in mathematics, statistics, or computer science.

2. These positions do not require experience in a related occupation.

Conclusion: In conclusion, while there are countless career opportunities out there to choose from, there are a few that statistically speaking, are the top ones when it comes to future job outlooks. In this speech I have only scratched the surface of these, by listing only the top three. However, these top three jobs, wind turbine service technicians, nurse practitioners, and data scientists, each bring their own benefits to the table so to speak. They are each vastly different and have their own requirements. If you are looking for a new career, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is a good resource to consult if you’re looking for some guidance on what careers are out there, and their outlook.

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience on why keeping your blood pressure under control is essential for your overall health.

Introduction: Did you know a good blood pressure control can prevent heart failure, kidney failure, and other vital organ failure. Hypertension (elevated blood pressure) is one of the leading causes of heart failure and kidney failure?

Thesis/Preview: Controlling blood pressure will prevent hospitalizations, heart failure, kidney failure, prevents damage to artery walls, prevent heart attacks, and strokes.

1. Systolic blood pressure A. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure within the arteries while the heart is beating. Systolic blood pressure is considered the top number of the blood pressure. When the heart is pumping systolic blood pressure is the force produced by the heart to pump blood to the body. 1. 120 mmHg is considered a normal blood pressure (top number) while a person is at rest sitting still and quietly.      2. A systolic blood pressure above 120 mmHg or greater is considered elevated.

2. A systolic blood pressure less than 90 mmHg is considered low or hypotension. 1. Systolic blood pressures 180 mmHg or higher is considered critically elevated and a person should seek medical attention right away.        2. If a systolic blood pressure is 80 mmHg or less this is considered critically low, and person should seek medical attention right away.

Transition: If both the systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressures are both too high or too low a person should seek medical attention immediately or call 911.

1. Diastolic blood pressure A. Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure within the arteries when the heart is relaxing in between heart beats. Diastolic blood pressure is considered the bottom number of the blood pressure.         1. A diastolic blood pressure between 60- 80 mmHg is considered normal.         2. Diastolic blood pressure above 80 mmHg is considered abnormal.   B. What is considered too low and when a person should seek medical attention.

2. Diastolic blood pressures less than 60 mmHg is considered low and may require medical attention based on the person’s current symptoms. a. Diastolic blood pressures less than 50 mmHg is considered critical, and a person should seek medical attention right away. b. When the diastolic blood pressure is less than 50 mgHg and the person’s heart rate is less than 50 bpm (beats per minute). This person should seek medical attention they could be going in heart failure or having heart valve complications.

3. Diastolic blood pressure is considered to be the most important because it plays and essential role in assisting the coronary vessels received adequate oxygen supply. Also, increased diastolic blood pressure means there is an increased chance of a person developing elevated systolic blood pressure.

Transition: How can a person control hypertension and what treatment options be available if unable to control hypertension with lifestyle changes.

1. When a person is diagnosed with hypertension meaning systolic and diastolic blood pressures are greater than 140/90 mmHg it is recommended to have home blood pressure monitoring. It is recommended that a person uses a home arm cuff blood pressure monitor vs. a wrist cuff. Wrist cuffs seem to be more inaccurate and can be harder to assess the person current disease state.

2. Lifestyle changes that can prevent hypertension or control hypertension. Diet- low sodium diets can help prevent or control hypertension. 2. Exercise- walking at least 30 minutes each day can help control hypertension and decrease chances of heart failure.

3. Treatments for hypertension when unable to control with diet and exercise alone. Beta blockers, Ace inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, Angiotensin II, and diuretics are medications that can be used to control blood pressure. Which medication regimen chosen by the person and their provider will be based off of what type of hypertension the person has and other medical conditions. Also, what effects the hypertension is causing harm to the body.

4. Another treatment option is for a nutrition consult to come up with a diet plan. 2. Another treatment option is to consult with a specialist.

Conclusion: In closing, controlling your blood pressure is very important because it can prevent heart failure, kidney failure, and other organ failure. Hypertension control can prevent hospitalizations which seem to crowd hospital most of the time recently. Diet and exercise can prevent and control hypertension. By preventing or controlling hypertension a person can live a happy healthy lifestyle.
