In special education, the referral process and intervention procedures are central to the educational experiences and opportunities that are provided for students. For this assignment, use the “Eduardo Case Study” scenario. Keep in mind that Eduardo has never been identified as having a disability. A teacher begins to notice that Eduardo is behind his peers in terms of academic development, and a decision to begin the RTI process is made.
 
In a 750-1,000 word narrative, address the following:
 
Explain the role of the general and special education teachers in Eduardo’s referral process according to professional standards of practice;
Describe what happens to Eduardo during the RTI process, the supporting collaboration that takes place, from evaluation to identification for special education services; and
Identify three appropriate interventions for each potential level of RTI/MTSS (9 total), based on Eduardo’s Case Study. Use 1-3 sources to support your interventions.
Case Study: Eduardo
 
3rd grade, Age 8
 
Eduardo is a third grade student who has never been retained, and has not been tested for special education services. Although he lives with both parents, there are six children at home and there is low parent involvement. There is no Internet available at his home, and he is considered to have a low socioeconomic status. There have not been any documented medical problems. Eduardo has been enrolled at the same school since kindergarten.
 
Currently, Eduardo’s teacher reports he is struggling with reading. Specifically, he is not meeting the standards on the district grade-level tests. He can read most words, but has difficulty with decoding new words. This has a negative effect on his fluency rate as well as his comprehension. Consequently, Eduardo is also behind in math and spelling.
 
Eduardo was able to meet all reading benchmarks during kindergarten and first grade, but he was always behind his peers, until the end of the year. He was socially promoted to the third grade even though he did not meet the district standards on the second grade reading inventory. Currently, his third grade phonemic scores range from 0 – 2/5. Eduardo is reading at a frustration level. His current reading fluency rate is 43, which places him in the 25th percentile compared to other third graders.
 
He struggles with spelling basic third grade words, and at times, misspells common sight words. Eduardo has been given modified spelling lists; however, he is still not successful.
 
Eduardo is able to complete basic math computations easily, but cannot complete word problems with any measure of success.
