Post 1: Martin Luther would have modified certain elements of his beliefs to highlight the consequences of sin in the hope that humanity recognizes their evil-doings, repentance, and redemption from God.
In this week’s module reading of The Genesis three Dialogue between Luther and Michelangelo, they both had different views when it came to the perspective of The Garden of Eden.
To start off, Martin Luther’s outlook on The Garden of Eden was Va distinct from the Bible. For example, he believed that the serpent was the greatest and cleverness animal on earth. And he attacks the weakest part of the human nature, which is a woman instead of a man. Luther believed that if Satan decided to tempt Adam, he would lose because Satan saw Adam as more excellent. As a result of this, he deceived Eve instead of Adam into eating a fruit off the forbidden tree God commanded them not to. By doing this, her disobedience caused sin to develop in our hearts. Another example is that in the bible it stated how, after eating from the tree, they gained knowledge that they were naked, so they covered themselves in figs and leaves. However, Luther believed that Eve’s eyes were never opened because she would’ve died rather than eaten the fruit. In addition to this, he also believed that Eve was so unbelief in both spirit and body that she didn’t realize she was doing evil.
On the other hand, Michelangelo’s perspective contradicts Martin Luther and the Bible. For instance, according to the bible, Eve took the fruit from the tree and persuaded Adam to eat it. But, he views it as Adam reaching up to the forbidden tree and taking the fruit for himself instead of Eve giving it to them. Not to mention, in his opinion, when Adam and Eve got expelled from the garden they were naked instead of covered in figs and leaves.
To sum up, Martin Luther would redesign certain pieces to show how grave the consequences for humanity are for sinning and turning away from God. And how we should repent and ask God for forgiveness when we disobey him
