The purpose of this organization is to protect the interests of patients by identifying and correcting problems in patient care before they become serious or life threatening.

Long term acute care hospital certification
Long term acute care hospitals are defined as those that provide 24-hour inpatient services and/or outpatient surgeries to patients with chronic, acute and complex medical conditions. These facilities usually have more than 100 beds, with many having more than 200 beds. In order to be certified by The Joint Commission, the hospital must meet national standards for patient care and quality improvement.
Long term acute care hospitals treat patients who require intensive treatment for long periods of time due to their condition or because they need continuous monitoring during recovery from surgery or other procedures. In addition to providing general medical services such as emergency department visits; diagnostic tests; lab workups; physical therapy sessions; occupational therapy sessions; personal counseling sessions; speech pathology activities (including audiological evaluations); psychiatric evaluations/treatment programs if necessary) these facilities may also provide specialized services including cardiac rehabilitation programs where individuals learn how exercise can improve their heart health over time (as well as other types of cardiac treatments).
